What You Want to Know

The sentences; today the bottom tomorrow the top were sewn on to a fabric together with volunteers. One can read the phrases “today the bottom, tomorrow the top” as referring to the notions of success, the artist working as an example of somebody caught in a loop of financial instability, ceaselessly moving from the bottom to the top and down again. In this respect, the work is willing to address the question that artists hear every once in a while: “How do you earn a living in your line of work?” “Today the bottom, tomorrow the top” is the answer. Apart from the above, the work can be read as referring to gay sexuality, in case of which the bottoms and the tops are on the receiving and the giving ends of the intercourse respectively. This aspect of gay people’s lives is something that different individuals, not necessarily the ones living the gay experience themselves, are interested in, often asking gay men what their “role” in sex is. The intent of the work is partly to satisfy this curiosity, the process of helping each other with the sewing working as an opportunity to interact with the people willing to ask the questions that “bug” them. The work is designed so as to touch on the topics of gay sexuality, success, identity and relationships of power, amongst others. Supported by YUP Young Urban Performances Festival |
